Job Description
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
 
• Overall responsibility is to manage and direct Production, Maintenance and Production Administration functions of the plant.
• Manage day-to-day operations of plant as well as assist in the development of long term goals for the plant.
• Coordination of production activities including job scheduling, staffing, etc.
• Transfer processes from CMOs and Davis lab to the newly retrofitted M3 plant.
• Run the processes for existing products at the plant for the first time. Debug the processes and make operational.
• For new products, spend time in Davis lab to understand the processes of MBI’s microbial and plant extracted products, then lead the scale-up development of the manufacturing processes for the at M3.
• At M3, optimize different fermentation downstream process parameters to improve performances and yields for reduction in COGs and improvement in gross margins.
• Lead scale up of existing and new formulations at M3.
• Hire plant staffing at M3 as needed.
• Gather and assist outside engineering firm with process design parameters during construction.
• Experience in plant extract large scale blending and packaging lines.
• Frequent travel from Bangor, MI to Davis, CA.  Travel to CMOs to learn the processes. Will need to spend several weeks in Davis, CA upon hiring before working at the M3 plant full time.
• Work with Supply Chain Department for purchasing, storage and inventory of raw materials and supply of final products to customers.
• Work with QC to ensure proper documentation of production and quality of end products.
• Ensure manufacturing operations comply with federal, state and local worker safety, public health and environmental requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, (Bio)Chemical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience in microbial production, including process optimization and scale-up with a minimum of 3 years in manufacturing operations supervision.

Responsibilities
 
BS/Ph.D.:  The selected individual will be responsible for the planning and execution of a wide range of studies in the area of Human Food Safety including total residue analysis, metabolic profiling and analytical method development in primarily livestock species and to a lesser extent in laboratory species. Hands-on laboratory work with complex biological matrices (plasma, excreta, tissues) is anticipated.

The function of this position is to supervise laboratory operations performing testing of food products and environmental samples. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Supervise laboratory operations to maintain quality and efficiency as they apply to the laboratory area
• Accurately perform and interpret test results, notifying the Laboratory Manager of deviations
• Supervise training of new and current laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and protocols as authorized
• Provided feedback for and participate in laboratory personnel reviews
• Report concerns of equipment failures and non-compliance of supplies and reagents

SPECIFIC DUTIES and AUTHORIZATIONS
• Supervise all activities, including quality control records, forms, files, pathogen log, etc.
• Communicate directly with clients on laboratory results
• Ensure that the appropriate number of technicians are allocated are in the respective areas of the Laboratory; this will include shifting people when necessary
• Submit staffing schedules to the Assistant Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Manager
• Oversee the scheduling of lunch breaks to ensure there is no down time in the laboratory
• Oversee status of all results and reporting for clients as needed (including notification of out of specification results)
• Work closely with the Technical Supervisor in the constant maintenance of proper methodology in all areas of laboratory testing
• Directly involved in the training of laboratory personnel and maintenance of training records
• Alert Assistant Laboratory Manager of need for repair services for malfunctioning equipment
• Ensure that all required lab control samples are prepared as required by procedures by assigning staff as necessary
• Maintain visibility in all areas in order to be available to intervene where efficiency may be lacking
• Directly address client needs as required and in collaboration with the Assistant Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Manager as required

The person in this position is responsible for leading product/process development, manufacture of clinical trial material, scale-up and commercialization activities for new immediate release and modified release solid oral dosage for multiple products and liquid oral dose products.
Lead the manufacture of Pivotal/Registration lots for new products.
Prepare or co-author Product Development documents for inclusion into the eCTD and Quality Overall Summary (QOS).
The Senior Scientist will be required to mentor junior level scientist and technicians in the design and execution of quality scientific experimentations to develop robust solid dosage and possibly liquid dosage form formulas.  
Will perform effective problem solving, resolution and implementation of process improvements in designated day-to-day operations and participate in large scope product/process development and projects.
This position will need to communicate effectively with the project manager and the larger development team and provide key timeline information, present data at team and departmental technical meetings.  

Required Skills
Must be knowledgeable of cGMP’s, understand tablet development and manufacturing and related equipment, have a strong ability to plan, organize, and execute projects, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with liquid, semi-solid and suspension products a plus.
