WMU med school facilities group seeks engineers, architects

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As the facilities committee for the Western Michigan University School of Medicine moves into the next phase of its work it needs to know who has the architectural and engineering capabilities to build a school of medicine.

The facility planning group has asked architects and engineers to present proposals stating their qualifications.

“It’s a first step, but it’s an important first step,” says Bob Miller, WMU associate vice president for community outreach. The committee is not ready to seek proposals on the project it simply wants to take a look at the expertise available, Miller says.

The school of medicine website has details on the request for qualifications.

Information also is available by contacting Miller by e-mail or by calling 269-387-2073.

WMU is working in partnership with Borgess Health, and Bronson Healthcare to create a regional health sciences center. The school recently received an anonymous donation of $100 million to get the medical school off the ground. School officials estimate at least another $200 million are needed to fully fund the program.

Plans are for the medical school to open in the fall of 2013 or 2014 with a class of about 50 students.
