South Haven to add kayak launch, improve creek

Those who like to take a paddle to the water could soon have a new way of getting on it.

The City of South Haven is seeking funding that would allow it to build its third kayak launch as part of a plan to improve a creek that runs between the Black River and Celery Pond.

The city has applied for $50,000 in federal grant funds from the Coastal Zone Management Grant Program administered through the State Department of Environmental Quality.

South Haven now offers a launch at the Black River Park and at the drawbridge over the river.

Kayakers use two existing launches regularly to get onto the Black River. Others take to the waters of Lake Michigan from city beaches.

As part of the proposed improvement project, the city wants to introduce plants that will help improve water quality and create a pleasant landscape, says Brian Dissette, South Haven City Manager. The vegetation to be planted along the shore of the creek would help create natural drainage there.
