Pontiac is the recipient of some much needed good news after hearing that EDS will consolidate 2,300 of its employees in the Pontiac Centerpoint Campus.
EDS will move the workers into the building at 585 South Blvd, southeast of downtown, in three phases. The move is set to begin in November and finish midway through next year. Most of those employees will come from offices in Troy where EDS' leases are expiring and a smattering of other locations throughout Metro Detroit.
"It's a very nice facility and it's centrally located for us," says Dave Ellis, communications manager for EDS. "It will meet our needs for many years to come."
General Motors built the three-story office building in 2001. EDS will lease 638,000 square feet of the space, which Ellis described as large and modern that will facilitate a collaborative environment for the company's teams.
Even though the building isn't in downtown, it is expected to bring in more business to the reviving core. The city of Pontiac has struggled with its budget in recent years but has continued to foster growth and redevelopment in its downtown over the last 10 years. The downtown is now known as one of Southeast Michigan's premier places for nightlife.
City leaders have been working to bring in more businesses through renovations of vacant buildings, such as the Crofoot and the Waterman Center, and residents by recruiting developers for new residential projects, such as the North Woodward Edge and Stonegate Pointe. Adding another 2,300 people within easy range of downtown's mix is only expected to help speed that development along.
