Funding comes through for Battle Creek Math and Science Center
For some time Battle Creek has made relocating the Mathematics and Science Center one of its primary goals for improving the downtown. Now the money to do that has been secured.
Battle Creek Public Schools recently announced $14 million needed for the relocation is coming from the Kellogg Company and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, both of which are headquartered in downtown Battle Creek.
The money will pay for the center’s move from Springfield to downtown Battle Creek and for upgrades in its laboratory spaces and its high-tech equipment. The new center will also make collaborations and internships with local businesses easier to accomplish.
The center serves 350 students from 16 school districts. Enrollment is expected to increase in the new location, the former Cereal City building at 171 W. Michigan Ave.
Plans are to complete the relocation in time for classes to be offered there in the fall of 2012. The center will continue to offer rigorous courses and the opportunity for students to do research in classroom laboratories.
The former Cereal City building, where the new center will be located, was donated to Battle Creek Unlimited by Kellogg Company. Battle Creek Unilimited works with the City of Battle Creek on economic development.
