Southwest Michigan should see modest economic gains in next year
The economic outlook in the Kalamazoo area for 2011 will be better than it has been in the past few years. Senior regional analyst for the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research George Erickcek anticipates employment in Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties will grow about 0.8 percent in 2011 and about 1.5 percent in 2012.

Although most employment data is shown as net change, Erickcek thinks it’s important to take a look at the absolute number of jobs created, as well. In 2009, nearly 5,000 jobs were created per quarter in Kalamazoo County. And they were being created in all sectors.
“That’s really promising,” Erickcek said. “That shows we have firms in Kalamazoo that are in a position to grow.”
