Last lecture: Beloved University of Michigan professor Ralph Williams bids adieu

One of the University of Michigan's best lecturers is moving on.

University of Michigan English professor Ralph Williams, who is retiring after teaching for more than three decades, reflected on the passage of time as he was honored by a standing-room only crowd at Rackham Auditorium on Tuesday.

"The world will not much care, nor long remember that which you gather as capital," said Williams to the mostly college-age crowd. "But it will remember and celebrate the beauty you create."

An immensely popular figure among students because of his expressive personality and compelling lectures, Williams was in fine form Tuesday, letting his voice soar across the auditorium without needing to use the microphone as he delivered an honorary "last lecture."
