Barnes & Nobel have put together a team to take a long hard look at buying Ann Arbor's
Borders Group Inc. The two book stores are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in sales. If bought, what does that mean to those jobs in Ann Arbor? Unfortunately, it's not entirely sure.

In March during a quarterly conference call with analysts
and investors, Barnes & Noble Chief Operating Officer
Mitchell Klipper said the company would "certainly take
a good look at (Borders) and put it under
review.''
Still, the news that Barnes & Noble has assembled a
team of executives and advisers to study Borders could have
huge implications for the bookseller's Ann Arbor
headquarters, which employs about 1,200 people.
If Barnes were to offer to buy a part or all of Borders,
the companies would likely wrestle with what to do with the
dual headquarters and the locations where they'd have
two stores in close proximity to each other. Antitrust
questions are likely to arise, too.
