U-M energy research lab & art school to get upgrades

The University of Michigan recently approved several on-campus renovation projects for energy and art programs.

The board of regents was set last week to approve an addition and second-floor renovation to the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Laboratory, to create a modern research laboratory to support the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Institute. The 10,000-square-foot renovation is expected to provide lab spaces for energy-related research, as well as an addition of the same size for administrative functions.

The $11.1 million project is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2013.

Another renovation project is slated for the university's School of Art and Design, which currently has graduate student and faculty studios in two separate locations. Renovating about 33,000 square feet of the Auxiliary Services Building will consolidate those two locations into one, which will "encourage collaboration, increase operating efficiencies, and locate the studios on North Campus, much closer to Art and Design," reads a university document. It will also save $114,000 annually on the leased space for both studios.

The School of Art and Design project is expected to be complete by next summer, at a cost of $4.9 million.
