U-M regents consider ISR building expansion

The University of Michigan Board of Regents is about to green light a large expansion of the university's Institute for Social Research after U-M received a $14.8 million federal stimulus grant for the project earlier this year.

The regents are will consider approving the $23 million project tomorrow at its monthly meeting. The development will consolidate the institute's facilities into a principal building on Division between Jefferson and William streets. The university must renovate part of the existing building, expand it and add more parking spaces to a nearby parking garages to accomplish that.

The four-level addition will consist of approximately 44,700 square feet of new space while renovating another 7,200 square feet of the existing building. The project also calls for significantly expanding the Thompson Street Parking Structure, nearly doubling its size.

The addition will mostly house the university's Health and Retirement Research group and Survey Methodology. The project will apply for LEED certification. Construction is expected to begin in the next 14-20 months.

Design will begin immediately if the regents approve the project. The regents will also have to approve construction plans when the design is complete.
