Bell’s Brewery birthday marks a company milestone

Bell’s Beer started with a 15-gallon soup kettle and a dream. That was 25 years ago.

From a home brew supply shop and then a 135-barrel a year operation in 1986, Bell’s has grown. In 2009, the company produced 125,000 barrels.

The company repeatedly earns accolades and national and international awards for the flavor and the quality of its beer.

This year, the Brewers Association Board recognized Bell‘s for its innovations, saying the company has changed the landscape of craft brewing.

Part of the company’s focus this year has been on major renovations to the Eccentric Cafe, where it sells its beer and offers entertainment in downtown Kalamazoo. The patio and outdoor deck are expected to be completed in time for the 25th birthday celebration Sept. 9-12.

The celebration weekend will feature live music and admission with no cover charge, lots of food, and public tours of the brewing facility.  The beer that put Bell’s on the map in 14 states, including a special 25th Anniversary Ale will be part of the event. Those wearing Bell’s shirts or hats get a $1 discount on pints until  9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and all day Sunday.

Work continues on the interior where a $3 million renovation includes a 40-foot-by-30-foot stage, a performer’s green room, a mezzanine, a bar and new bathrooms.

“In some ways it seems like just yesterday when I started this adventure,” says founder and company president Larry Bell, “I’m not sure I could have imagined where it would take me.”
