Michigan Tech among colleges facing budget cuts from the state

The Internet is something special, isn't it? Not only does it bring amazing wealth of information to anyone who seeks it, but it brought some old-fashioned wealth to a small Upper Peninsula community recently thanks to a contest.

Excerpt: A Reader's Digest contest ended at midnight Tuesday with amazing results for three Michigan towns beset by financial pain.

Vying for Internet votes with more than 9,000 other communities nationwide for cash to aid civic causes, tiny Grand Marais (population 300) in the Upper Peninsula grabbed the grand prize of $40,000, with 1,281,724 votes logged since October; college town Albion snared fourth place and $10,000 for a tally of nearly 643,000 votes, and rural St. Johns near Lansing took sixth for another $10,000 award after drawing about 611,000 votes.
