Sault Ste. Marie gets cleaned up with help from more than 70 residents

The Daily Press in Escanaba recently noted that Manistique will likely be boasting its very own farmers' market, which has been in the planning stages since last year. The market will likely have a preview this summer with it becoming a permanent attraction next summer.

Having a market such as this in Manistique, which is the seat of Schoolcraft County, would open up an area for all of the local producers to sell their goods instead of forcing them to seek other venues.

Excerpt: According to Kerry Ott, community coordinator of the Manistique alliance, SAH members formed a Farmer's Market workgroup to concentrate on the project. The farmer's market will premiere in 2011, following the final planning that will take place this summer.

"We are making good progress. We are planning to do interest surveys over the summer, to get feedback from the community members," she explained. "We will be marketing over the summer and getting the word out about the farmer's market."

For those residents unfamiliar with the process of a farmer's market, a preview will be held in August.

"We are planning a harvest market during the last concert of the Central Park concert series in August," said Ott. "This will be kind of an introductory; it will be our first official harvest market."

The harvest market will introduce the basic idea of a farmer's market, notes Ott, which encourages buying locally.
