Michigan Technological University grad students get industry-like perks

Sometimes it's tough to be a woman, especially when you're a grad student and you want to have a family. It's a tough choice, your education and career or your desire to be a parent, but it is a lot easier of a decision to make now if you attend Michigan Tech University.

Excerpt: Lihui Hu and her husband live on the salary she receives from working as a graduate assistant at Michigan Technological University. So when she became pregnant earlier this year, she worried that when the baby came she'd have to take a break from her studies.

But Hu didn't have to be concerned. In October, she became the first MTU student to take advantage of a new policy that gives graduate students who become parents six weeks of leave from classes, research and teaching. Those who draw salaries as grad assistants keep getting their pay.
