Search for two French minesweepers lost more than 90 years ago could resume

Searching for sunken vessels isn't just something you can hop in your boat and go do at anytime of the year on Lake Superior. That's why the process for searching for two lost French minesweeper ships takes time and planning.

But, if they're going to do it this year, they better get started, according to an article in the Sault Star.

Excerpt: "If we go this year it will be in late August, when Superior is the calmest. Otherwise, it will definitely be next year," said Tom Farnquist, executive director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, headquartered in the Michigan Sault.

The Historical Society mounted a two-week sonar search for the 630-tonne minesweepers off of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, which juts far out into Superior, eight years ago, in 2003, but didn't come across any targets of interest.
