600-foot fissure appears in Menominee County, explanation may be simple

When a giant crack appears in the ground, most people have the sense to run away. Here in the Upper Peninsula, we make a point of getting close to it and poking it with a stick. Thankfully, the fissure that appeared in Menominee County last week is quite possibly a normal occurrence.

Excerpt: A naturally-occurring phenomenon may be behind the sudden appearance of a crevice more than 600 feet in length in Menominee County.

According to Rory Mattson, executive director of the Delta Conservation District in Gladstone, the crevice, or fissure, may be the result of fractured rock deep beneath the clay, granite and other rock layers that exist below the surface.
