A new winery and brewery will be greeting visitors to the Sault this summer--and it's not hard to anticipate the combination of locally-crafted beers and wines with beautiful summer weather should be a big success.
Already open, the 1668 Winery is paired up with the Lockside Brewery at 100 West Portage Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie, and is run by a local with plenty of experience in the industry--Soo Brewery owner and city commissioner Ray Bauer.
Bauer, Sault Area Chamber of Commerce and Chamber Ambassadors recently held a ribbon cutting at the
1668 Winery and Lockside Brewery in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.
On the corner of Ashmun and Portage, the upscale winery is in the former home of the Corner Pub, just a block away from the Soo Locks and handy to the farmer's market and other retail stores. Bauer invested his own money and also connected with state funding to update the front of the building.
A light menu also is offered, taking advantage of the former pub's kitchen, but the emphasis remains squarely on Sault-made wine and beer.
