The Keweenaw Snow Gauge: The Keweenaw Snow Gauge is an iconic destination for travelers on U.S. 41 between Mohawk and Phoenix. This life-sized snow gauge shows the Keweenaw's record snowfall that was set during the winter of 1978-79. During that winter, the Keweenaw received 390.4 inches of snow between November and April. Each spring the Keweenaw County Road Commission moves the arrow to indicate how much snow fell during the most recent winter.
Average winter: An average winter on the Keweenaw Peninsula means between 240-270 inches. Last year – the season totaled 153.25 inches by April 4. As of Friday, Feb. 21, the Keweenaw had received 238.75 inches.
Winter events: Ramping up for winter events, the snow base will perform well for the CopperDog150 March 28-Feb. 2, sending dog sled teams hundreds of miles for victory in the Keweenaw. Snow offerings are a plenty in Copper Harbor, with cross-country skiing taking off around Fort Wilkins and the End of the Road Trails are becoming popular in the endless powder. Last weekend Hancock hosted its inaugural Snow Sculpting Invitational, bringing in some of the best carving talent across the U.S. and some local contenders.
