Businesses on Michigan's Southwest coast are reporting increased tourist traffic was pretty great this summer. And that's great for business, reports the Herald-Palladium.
Officials say there was a large increase in the number of people who visited the Twin Cities area during the traditional tourist season -- from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
They're crediting much of the influx to the addition of the Silver Beach Center, Whirlpool Compass Fountain and The Golf Club at Harbor Shores -- and great weather.
Excerpt:
Derek Perry, deputy St. Joseph city manager, said there are no statistics to measure the number of this season's tourists, but he said he believes tourism was up from last year, based on his anecdotal observations of downtown foot traffic. He's not talking just about weekends.
"There's always crowds in the downtown on the streets," Perry said. "It's not just Friday, Saturday and Sunday anymore. It's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. The crowds are there for sure. I don't know how to attribute that other than it's just becoming more of a popular destination and maybe people are staying longer because of the additional amenities and attractions here."
