Signs that the economy might be turning the corner can be seen in every part of Portage as in the past year millions of dollars in new businesses, expansions, renovations and other commercial and industrial developments have taken shape, reports MLive. Some in the works include the first IMAX in the area, a significant expansion of the Kalamazoo Air Zoo and Stryker’s conversion of an long empty Upjohn building.

“Since the downturn in economy in 2008, for commercial and industrial and office developments we have actually fared fairly well. We’re seeing more activity this fiscal year than last year,” said Vicki Georgeau, director of the Portage Department of Community Development.
