Midland Mall Comic Con levels up with record attendance

Superheroes, sci-fi icons, and fantasy fanatics took over Midland Mall this past weekend for the fifth annual Midland Mall Comic Con, the largest in the event’s history. Expanding to three days for the first time, the convention brought together vendors, cosplayers, and pop culture enthusiasts to celebrate creativity, fandom, and community.

With an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 attendees throughout the weekend, the event saw its highest turnout yet, solidifying its place as a must-attend gathering for fans across the region.

“Smaller events like this open up the world of cosplay and pop culture to audiences who otherwise would never know about it,” says professional streamer and cosplayer, Xaphora. “It also opens the door for new cosplayers and creators who are just venturing into the world of conventions.”

Events like Midland Mall Comic Con not only broaden the horizons for attendees but also provide local businesses like Kakes the Great Popcorn an opportunity to connect more deeply with the community.

Over 130 vendors filled the mall’s open spaces, and a recurring sentiment among them was excitement over such a large turnout. Storefronts that normally sit empty, such as the former Men’s Wearhouse, were opened to accommodate the influx of merchants offering a diverse selection of comics, collectibles, handmade goods, and other unique merchandise.

Cosplay events were among the biggest draws, featuring contests such as a Kids Cosplay Contest, a Fursuit Contest, and both Individual and Group Cosplay Contests.

Panels titled "The World of Competitive Cosplay" and "The Ladies of Cosplay" provided attendees with a deeper understanding of the artistry, dedication, and craftsmanship involved in the craft.

“Cosplay is for everyone,” says Xaphora. “It’s a great way to express your creativity and celebrate your favorite entertainment—whether it’s a movie, anime, or video game.”

The transition, supported by Life Church and local volunteers, allowed the event to expand and achieve new milestones.

With the event’s rapid growth and positive response, organizers have already confirmed that Midland Mall Comic Con will return for a sixth year in 2026.

“It makes me happy knowing events like Midland Comic Con are becoming more widespread, and common among general society,” says Xaphora.

Fans can look forward to even more vendors, activities, and opportunities to immerse themselves in the world of superheroes and wizards.
