The Commons Pedestrian Plaza in Downtown Midland is still open until Sept. 29, but the Downtown Development Authority is making plans for the plaza's future beyond 2025. They are seeking public feedback on this issue through a new survey that is accessible on
E-CityHall.
The Pedestrian Plaza has been offering a two-block, car-free section of Main Street for increased shopping, dining, socializing, and events every summer since 2020. The Midland City Council has granted approval to extend the Pedestrian Plaza annually from early June to late September until the 2025 season. However, a decision regarding the continuity of the Pedestrian Plaza beyond 2025 has not been made yet.
The survey asks residents and visitors about their experiences in the Pedestrian Plaza in 2024 as well as their opinions on the future of the space beyond 2025. The survey should take 15 - 20 minutes to complete and will close to responses on Oct. 6 at midnight.
After the survey is finished, the findings will be shared with City staff, the Downtown Development Authority Board, Downtown Midland businesses, and the Midland City Council. This will help them decide what should happen with the Pedestrian Plaza in the future. Results will be discussed during the Downtown Development Authority Board meeting in November and at the City Council meeting in December.
Individuals who do not have internet access or cannot complete the survey online may submit feedback to Community Affairs Director Selina Harris at 989-837-3304 or sharris@midland-mi.org.
