Midland’s Cardboard Sled Races promise thrills, spills and creative fun

Midland City Forest's annual Cardboard Sled Races will return on Saturday, Feb. 8. This year’s theme is “Storybook”. While participation in the theme is optional, organizers encourage racers to decorate their sleds and dress up as their favorite storybook characters.

Location
The event will take place at Midland City Forest, 2840 E. Monroe Rd. Spectators are welcome to bundle up, grab a warm drink, and cheer on the cardboard-crafted creations.

Fees and Schedule
Registration costs $10 for the first sled and $6 for each additional sled. Groups are divided by age categories and will race at the following times:
  • 11 a.m - Group A (Riders 8 and under)
  • Noon - Group B (Riders ages 9-17)
  • 1 p.m. - Group C (Family/organization, ages 18 and older)
Divisions and Classes
Racers can enter one of two sled-building divisions:
  • Original: Sleds constructed solely from cardboard, duct tape and glue (paint and coloring allowed).
  • Catch-All: Allows limited soft materials (yarn, egg cartons, cellophane, etc.) on top of the standard cardboard base. Cardboard tubing may be used in this division.
Team classification depends on the oldest participant on each sled. For example, if anyone over 18 joins the race, the team competes in Group C. A designated team parent or manager must handle registration and check-in.

Awards
Winners will be recognized in three categories:
  • King of the Hill: Fastest sled in each age group and division.
  • Best Wipeout: One per age group.
  • Theme Star: One per age group, awarded to the most spirited team theme.
Registration
Online registration began Jan. 6, with same-day signups available on-site if space permits. Each team should arrive 30 minutes before race time to allow for check-in and final inspections.

Rules and Regulations
Midland Parks & Recreation reminds participants that sleds must be primarily made of cardboard, glue and tape. Wood, glass, metal, and plastics are prohibited, and all sleds must pass an on-site inspection.

Racers are encouraged to wear helmets, and no more than six occupants may ride a single sled.

The single-elimination format could shift to double elimination if fewer teams participate in a division.

All team members must remain in or on the sled to cross the finish line successfully.
