The
Midland County Educational Service Agency welcomed the public Monday, Jan. 13, to celebrate the grand opening of a new addition at its historic Sugnet School, 3917 Jefferson Ave.
Originally built in 1886 as a one-room schoolhouse, the Sugnet School has been a longstanding fixture in the Midland community.

Krystal KozuchThe new wing provides new learning resources.Now, thanks to a $17 million bond project approved by voters in August 2022, the campus features a state-of-the-art wing designed to provide modern classrooms, collaborative learning spaces and innovative resources.
“We believe that every student deserves a space that reflects their value and potential,” says MCESA Superintendent John M. Searles. “This new wing is not just a building; it’s a symbol of our community’s dedication to investing in the future of all students.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony included a tour of the newly completed addition, which is the first of four phases planned for the school’s renovation. The Sugnet School houses MCESA’s SK-12 and post-secondary programs, as well as professional staff and administration. Construction on the remaining phases will continue through 2026.

As one of Michigan’s 56 intermediate school districts, MCESA aims to provide leadership, deliver services and leverage resources to improve education in collaboration with constituent districts, schools and the larger community.
