This week,
Midland Area Farmers Market (MAFM) kicked off their celebration of the twenty-fifth National Farmers Market Week. Guests were invited to share pastries with public servants, listen to a story from the Dow Library, and enjoy local musicians. One of the day’s highlights was a fish taco cooking demonstration hosted by My Michigan Health.
However, celebrating this week is about more than events. It’s about recognizing contributions the MAFM makes to our community and supporting initiatives like the Double Up Food Bucks Program.

The program helps families who use Bridge cards (Michigan's EBT system) by stretching their food budget. Participants receive $2 in Double Up Food Bucks for every $2 spent on a Bridge card, with a daily limit of $20. This allows families to double their spending on fresh, locally-grown produce.
Participation in the program is simple. You can use Double Up Food Bucks tokens if you have an active EBT/Bridge Card or receive SNAP benefits.

“We are excited to celebrate Farmers Market Week again this year with our vendors and marketgoers. Continued support from the community through each season is truly appreciated by all market vendors and staff.”
The Double Up Food Bucks Program shows how targeted initiatives can make a real difference in communities. Last year, the impact of MAFM’s food assistance impact was over $52,000. Since 2009, thousands of families, state-wide, have benefited from over $30 million worth of nutritious food. The program also helps sustain small farms and contributes to Mihigan’s economy. It's a win-win situation: families access fresh food, and local farmers gain more customers.

The MAFM is happy to accept different payment types so everyone can buy fresh and healthy foods. Thanks to a strong partnership with
Isabella Bank, the market can take cash, checks, EBT (tokens), credit or debit (tokens), Double Up Food Bucks (tokens), Senior Project FRESH (coupon), and Prescription for Health (coupon).
If you missed the opening events for this year’s National Farmers Market Week, join the MAFM on Aug.10 for even more fun. These activities include the Second Annual Pike Baking Contest, the American Chemical Society Pollinator Week booth, and the Go Green Club.
