Northwood UniversityNorthwood Coach Dustin Beurer Cheers rang out high above Hantz Field on the campus of Northwood University as the Timberwolves hosted their first game of the new football season.
After a 10-7 upset victory over Saginaw Valley State University, fans were reminded of the hope, excitement and heightened expectations that seem to arrive with each new season.
That has held true not only for Northwood University but also Dow High School and Midland High School. Each program has had renewed excitement surrounding their programs with the new season underway.
“The unique thing about football is the whole year is a marathon,” Northwood University coach Dustin Beurer says. “The start of the season is really in the spring. During the fall you only get 11 opportunities. There are no do-overs. You only get one shot at that program you are facing.”
“It’s an exciting time and it seems like the season is gone in a blink of an eye. It happens so quick.” Now in Week Five of the high school football season, it does appear the season is flying on by.
On Sept. 27 Midland Dow will travel to Traverse City Central while Midland High will play host to Traverse City West on Sept. 30. Meanwhile Northwood University will travel to Lake Erie College on Sept 28.
“There is some excitement around our program,” Northwood coach Dustin Beurer said. “It’s about growth. The program has had some tough times. But our guys have done a great job getting out in the community and doing things to give back. That always helps increase support for the program.
“I’ve noticed even with my own young kids and their friends and families. More people are interested. Midland has a small-town feel even as a bigger city. We want to make seeing Northwood University football what people want to do on a Saturday after they visit a farmer’s market. We want to make it a priority stop for everyone.”
