Art Reach of Mid Michigan has put out a call to artists for a juried art show that will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment, the amendment that guaranteed women the right to vote.
The local arts organization is looking for work that celebrates women or the women’s suffrage movement. Given the nature of the event, Art Reach is hoping to draw from the community of women artists, though the call for artists is open to everyone.
"This is open to anyone but there is a focus on women artists. It’s targeted toward women’s unique perspectives, and women that belong to disenfranchised groups," says Jeff Silvernail, marketing coordinator at Art Reach.
"It’s their experience that’s more unique, but maybe also more universal."
The juried show is different than the gallery shows Art Reach typically hosts. Where usually Art Reach organizes shows around one or two artists, the juried show has artists submit up to three pieces for consideration. A committee then curates a show of what could be a dozen artists or more.
In order to submit, artists must email a high quality photo of their art work and include a title, the dimensions, and an artist’s statement. There is a submission fee of $20 for up to three works of art.
The deadline for submission is Friday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m.
The show itself is schedule to run from March 4 through March 28.
"We’ve received submissions from as far as the U.P. already. We’ve had some very high quality entries so far. You always hope for more," says Kim Bigard, administrative coordinator for Art Reach.
"This fits with our mission, to see top notch art and give people something to talk about."
