There's a new spa in town, and its origins and mission are more than just skin deep.
Glo Skin Spa held a grand opening celebration recently, with a party and members of the Midland Chamber of Commerce there to help cut the ribbon. The spa offers skin care services, including hydrafacials, injectables, laser facial hair removal, light therapy, and much more. There's also the Glotique, a retail section with yoga- and leisure-wear, swimsuits, jewelry, and mineral-based makeup for sale.
For Meko Price, founder and owner, the spa is much more than a beauty center. It's a place of recovery and rejuvenation. Price was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2017, and she has her final treatment scheduled for this March. It was over the course of this past year that she decided it was time to start her own business.
"I got a new perspective on life. A cancer treatment changes your life and how you feel about how you want to move forward," she says. "I started to wonder, Why can't we do something makes you feel good, and from the inside out."
"You look good. You do good. You feel better."
Glo Skin offers medical grade skincare treatments in a spa atmosphere. Price views the business as an opportunity to give back, donating portions of proceeds and planning various fundraisers throughout the year.
Price grew up in Midland, moved to the east coast, and then to California. She then returned to Midland with her husband and young children, wanting to be near her mother, grandmother, and her husband's parents in Canada, and to raise her children in the Midwest. She says that Glo Skin is her bringing a little piece of California back with her, and integrating it with her hometown roots.
"Opening my own business is something I've always wanted to do," Price says. "You get so many ideas as you work for other businesses that it becomes the natural thing to do."
Glo Skin Spa is located at 6225 N. Jefferson Ave. in Midland.
