It was a shock for the Department of Natural Resources and Environment when they
finally confirmed that there are cougars in the Upper Peninsula this year. Everyone else was already well aware of it.
Now the same song and dance may be taking place in Bay County, where sightings of the big cats have been reported, but the DNRE is refusing to confirm nor deny their residence here.

Wildlife officials are divided on the answer to that question, with some stating there is no evidence to support the assertion and others emphatic in their belief that the area is home to the large cats.
"The only places they have been confirmed would be up in the Upper Peninsula," said Katie Keen, a biologist with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment for the Saginaw Bay Area — which covers Bay, Midland, Isabella, Clare and Gladwin counties.
