Mt. Pleasant native wins Michigan Open for second straight year

Ryan Brehm is once again the reigning champion of the Michigan Open golf tournament.

The Mount Pleasant native -- and also a Michigan State University star -- defended his title during the  93rd Michigan Open Championship at the Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake. This year's event, which was held from June 14 to 17, featured a field of 156.

Excerpt:

"It was just a calm, nice, fun day," said Brehm, who earned $10,000. "I was a little agitated the first couple rounds. But today it was pretty even-keeled."

Brehm became the eighth player to repeat in the tournament's 93-year history. Gary Smithson, the head pro at Thousand Oaks Golf Club in Grand Rapids, threw seven birdies and a scare into Brehm with a 65. "I was aware of what Smithson was doing on No. 12," said Brehm, 24, a mini-tour player. "I took a good, long look at the leaderboard and I proceeded to chunk a sand wedge. I could be better at not paying attention to that."
