Spas, a theater and even a hotel now can come to storefronts in downtown Grosse Pointe after City Council revamped zoning rules in the Village to attract features found in larger downtowns such as Royal Oak and Birmingham.
The changes are to make the Village competitive, lure more people to live and work downtown, offer a larger variety of retailers and services and bring a more vibrant atmosphere to the quaint three-block-long shopping area.
Buildings can be four stories high but shorter as they near residential areas. There can be broader retail uses in first-floor spaces on Kercheval, such as beauty salons and kitchen design showrooms. Offices can go behind first-floor retail stores instead of only in second-floor spots, City Manager Peter Dame said.
