A two-year project to green Jefferson Avenue from the Grosse Pointe border to Interstate 375 has wrapped up with nearly 500 trees planted along the thoroughfare.
The project was funded through a $275,000 grant from the Cotton family of Grosse Pointe.
The family owns the Health Plan of Michigan and recently moved its offices from Southfield to downtown Detroit. The family commutes on Jefferson and thought it needed trees, and opted for the donation, Jon Cotton said.
"We are an environmentally conscious family," Cotton said. "It was a no-brainer for us."
Cotton and his brothers Sean and Michael annually donate more than $70,000 from their business' profits to charitable causes, Jon Cotton said.
