The Michigan Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee, led by
Senator Jason Allen (R-37th District), took up the
Next Michigan Development Act today in Lansing. Wayne County Executive
Robert Ficano and Washtenaw County Administrator Robert Guenzel were on
hand to testify on behalf of the legislation and its importance to the
advancement of the Detroit Region Aerotropolis.

The Aerotropolis partnership expects this to be the first in a
series of hearings related to this package of bills. The Aerotropolis
partnership has requested that the Commerce and Tourism Committee move
the bills to the Senate floor by the end of April. Just recently,
officials in Wayne County and Washtenaw County reached an agreement in
principle with leaders in Oakland County on modifications of provisions
of the legislation that would, among other provisions, discourage
“poaching” of businesses from one area of Michigan to another. The
agreement with Oakland County follows months of negotiations with
Oakland County, the City of Detroit, and Grand Rapids to create a
package of bills that will advance economic development throughout the
State of Michigan. The consensus reached on the Act is a reflection of
our state coming together to create jobs and build upon our state’s
economic assets.
