West Bloomfield Township Public Library Director Clara Bohrer and Board President Ken Macon received the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from first lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Dec 17.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services honored West Bloomfield Township Library and four other libraries across the nation this year.

In spoken remarks, Obama praised the libraries and museums for their commitment to innovate and serve the public, especially in tough times.
"When the West Bloomfield Township was hard hit by the economic downturn, the West Bloomfield Township Public Library sponsored job workshops and computer trainings to get folks back on their feet," she said.
Bohrer said the first lady also gave encouraging words in private to the medal winners. "We talked about the importance of public libraries and museums in our country and how they really do make a contribution to the quality of life," she said. "She sent us holiday greetings from the president, her two daughters and Bo (the family dog)."
