More than 1,000 people are expected to turn out this month for VegFest to sample vegetarian dishes and learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet.

"We're not about admonishing people who eat meat," said Cyndi Summers, a spokeswoman for VegMichigan, a nonprofit group. "This is more of a celebration of the positive aspects of eating a vegetarian diet."

Formerly called the Great American Meatout, the event is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 26 at Ferndale High School, 881 Pinecrest.

Attendees can sample vegetarian dishes from area restaurants, listen to presentations on the benefits of a plant-based diet, and pick up information on healthy eating, animal rights and environmentalism.
