New Year's Eve Ball Drop moves to Royal Oak's Sixth Street

Royal Oak will host a New Year's Eve Ball Drop again in the late hours of 2010 — but this year's festivities will take place at the corner of Sixth Street and Washington Ave. in the downtown area.

The event has been moved from the intersection of Fourth Street and Washington Ave. after a few reports of miscommunication by local owners, who claim they weren't notified the corner would be shut down for two days to build live music stages.

Two blocks away, on Sixth Street, Royal Oak DDA President and Pronto! restaurant owner Jim Domanski says he's excited to be part of the night's activities.

"I’m the No. 1 person that is going to be hurt by it, and I’m cool," Domanski told the City Commission. "I want it there so it can happen."

The Ball Drop is sponsored by Citadel Broadcasting, which owns 93.1 DOUG FM and 96.3 WDVD. Citadel says two national acts will appear at the Ball Drop, and attendance is expected between 5,000 — 8,000 to celebrate the close of 2010.
