Lasagna garden grows goodness

Farmington Hills neighbors have not only an organic garden... but an interesting one as well.

Ingredients such as wet newspapers, compost and vegetation make up the recipe for the Greening Street Lasagna Garden.

It's a small, 4-foot by 4-foot raised garden situated in a convenient spot in Fran Vallely's yard, so her neighbors can stop by and check on it as they please.

The little garden, protected by a wooden base and wire fence, gets its name from the way in which its ingredients are assembled -- in layers.

"We started with a layer of wet newspapers and alternated some dirt, compost, dry clippings and more layers of dirt and compost," said Vallely.

It's a group effort of neighbors Vallely, Mark and Rusty Farrell, Irene Kernicky; Mary Sitko; Shirley Perkins; Lorna Slenkai; Bette Austin and Jim Viazanko.
