Excerpt:
What does it take to be great teacher? Ask Karen Lessenberry.
She
was honored last week as the Michigan History Teacher of the Year by
the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America.
"My
philosophy is that history has been misunderstood," said Lessenberry,
who teaches at Groves High School. "People will say history is about
memorizing facts and dates. To think that is to not understand it at
all. History is the reconstruction of what may have happened, and one's
reconstruction of what may have happened is one's own interpretation. I
tell my students they are getting my interpretation, and that they must
work out their own as we study our units. That is a very different
conception of history."
