Becoming a personal care technician (PCT) is an excellent way for people interested in a medical career to gain entry-level experience in patient care. PCTs make $13—$16 an hour on average, despite a 93% industry turnover rate due to lack of training.
Oakland University's Riverview Institute at the School of Nursing invites potential career changers to examine a new program aimed at certifying PCTs for medical care work. The program also provides training to work in phlebotomy and as an EKG technician.
In addition, students can become eligible to sit for the PCT National Certification Exam, as well as establish an educational foundation necessary to go on to become licensed practical nurses or registered nurses.
Admission requirements for the PCT program include a criminal background check, health screening and a drug-free test. Monthly information sessions are offered on the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Riverview Institute of Oakland University, located at 7733 E. Jefferson in Detroit.
