Two homes owned by Common Ground, a shelter for homeless and runaway youth in Royal Oak, received some well-earned TLC ... thanks to the efforts of 20 local volunteers.
20 volunteers employed by Ford worked together as a team under the guidance of Rebuilding Together Oakland County to renovate these homes for Common Ground's 17 to 20-year-old residents -- from the inside out.
Rebuilding Together Oakland County is a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, the nation's largest nonprofit dedicated to maintaining and restoring properties for charities, nonprofits and low-income homeowners.
From 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Ford Volunteer Corps Model Team members scraped, painted, installed floors and even renovated kitchens at the two once-dilapidated homes on Washington St. They were paid by Ford just as if they were working in the office or at the factory.
"We're not building from the ground up, it's rebuilding the home, from the inside out," said Ford employee Dave Tengler.
