Birmingham eateries are looking to expand outdoors this summer.

Birmingham plans to roll out the outdoor dining tables in even greater numbers this year.
Several initiatives were approved at the Dec. 7 City Commission meeting to attract more customers in 2010. The biggest change is the addition of 45 extra days to the outdoor dining season, allowing restaurants to set out the tables from April 1 to Nov. 15. And for a $200 permit, restaurants will be allowed to set up tables in the off-season when the weather permits.
Dave Duey, general manager of Forte Restaurant on South Old Woodward, endorses the moves.
"It's Michigan -- you're going have beautiful days in March," he said. "This year, the October weather was almost better than the August weather ... the idea we're finally going to be doing this is fantastic."
