Time to 'pimp' the pots in Ferndale

Maybe Ferndale is cool because it isn't afraid to use the word "pimp" when it comes to a community event?

Unique pots and planters of greenery will make their debut 6-9 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in downtown Ferndale's "Pimp Your Pot" competition and community event. Last year, Twisted Shamrock won "Best in Show" for its creative design.

An eight-foot tall, wooden replica of the store's logo was secured in a planter of flowers and served as a climbing tower for vines. Thursday's event includes a seed and perennial exchange, and gardening-related activities for kids at Schiffer Park, located at Nine Mile and Planavon.

"We're going to have a 'how to' for those who want to pimp their pot at home. That will be at Blumz at 503 E. Nine Mile," said Chris Hughes, communications and marketing manager for the DDA. "We'll also have an organic gardening Q&A at the new Green Thumb Garden Center at 22963 Woodward. It's an awesome store. The owner (Kristopher Lieber) has sunflowers growing indoors. They're six feet tall. For anyone who's a gardener, it's worth a visit."
