U-M Dearborn welcomes 16 Arab women scholars thanks to $350,000 grant

The University of Michigan-Dearborn is working out a trade of sorts that will result in 16 Arab women with advanced degrees working in Metro Detroit laboratories.

The women will specialize in science and technology sectors such as engineering and math. They will spend eight weeks working in southeastern Michigan research laboratories.

The idea is reach out to new resources on a global basis and establish new knowledge-based research networks. It will also help make foreign-born scholars more familiar with the U.S. research community. The program is recruiting women from countries in the Middle East and North Africa, such as Egypt, Lebanon and Kuwait.

U.S. Department of State‘s Office of Citizen Exchanges is funding the program with a $350,000 grant. The University of Michigan-Dearborn’s College of Engineering and Computer Science is quarterbacking the initiative.
