Breeze Design Studio's JALAPPENO makes apps easier, cost-effective

Breeze Design Studio is working to make smart phone applications broadly available to small businesses with its JALAPPENO software.

The Birmingham-based start-up (it calls the city's Rail District home) developed JALAPPENO with an eye for bringing down the cost of creating an app from thousands of dollars to hundreds of dollars. The new software also promises to make maintaining the app as simple as updating a Facebook page.

"We have always tried to be on the cutting edge of technology," says Rukmal "Rocky" Fernando, founder and president of Breeze Design Studio. "JALAPPENO is a prime example of that."

Breeze Design Studio has rounded up a handful of local high-end restaurants, such as Andiamo's, as its first customers. These customers pay about $500 for the app (more if it's both Android and iPhone) and then a monthly fee to maintain it. Fernando hopes to take this product national over the next year, selling 6,000 individual apps.

"I want to capture the market as soon as possible," Fernando says.

Such a jump would allow the company to take a significant step forward with the size of Breeze Design Studio's staff. It would go from its current roster of six employees and an intern to an extra 6-12 hires over the next year.
