Green Space: Earth Day '08 takes over SE Michigan

Hear ye, hear ye! Spring is here and with it comes Earth Day, April 19 this year. In years past, it might have felt a bit like a farce, but more and more people are taking the environment seriously these days, meaning that there are more, and more meaningful Earth Day events this time around.

While there are many things a-happening in Metro Detroit, a couple worthy of note (both in the 19th) are:
  • The annual Cass Park clean-up, sponsored by Trips for Kids. The clean-up runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon and concludes with a lunch. Read more about the area, a neat neighborhood in lower Midtown, in this Model D feature. Call 313-850-7851.
  • Over on the East Side, Creekside Community Development Corporation, in collaboration with the Greening of Detroit, will be planting a tree nursery and community garden on Kitchener Avenue from 9 a.m. until noon. Neighborhood groups will be providing entertainment and refreshments. Call 313-822-0062.
Grosse Pointe, not to be outdone, along with LocalMotion has activities planned for that same day. Their community-wide Earth Day fair, "Healthy Earth, Healthy Living: How to Go Green", will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center. From massage to soil testing to electronics recycling to booths from local green businesses to children's activities, the fair aims to hit all the right notes. Call 313-881-2263.

On April 20, Ann Arbor's Sunday Artisan Market is hosting an art fair with a special emphasis on artists that work with reclaimed materials and have "green" themes in their work. Guests will include getDowntown, a commuter transportation initiative, People's Food Co-op, Recycle Ann Arbor's Re-Use Center, Vespa of Ann Arbor and other local ecology programs.  The market is at 315 Detroit St. Call 734-996-0566.

Finally, up in Royal Oak on Saturday, the Detroit Zoo is hosting a myriad of child-themed programs, including crafts and games that are all green-themed.

Inspire that future green warrior with a fun day at the zoo -- and remind him or her that their actions can help protect the animals they love to visit.
