The press release bills the Sierra Club & Beer event as "THE event for young professionals who want to drink up and do something." Corny, yes, but it does combine two things young people like to flock to – alcohol and a cause.
The first of the monthly events will focus on making urban areas more environmentally responsible, specifically in regards to climate change. The mayors of Royal Oak, Ferndale and Berkley will be at the Berkley Front at 6 p.m. April 24 to talk about ways their cities can take steps towards conserving energy and providing ways for residents to live green lifestyles.
"We have lived through six decades when growth, expansion, consumerism and the acquisition of 'stuff' have become the national norm," says Marilyn Stephan, mayor of Berkley. "We need to return to a time when conservation, thrift and a concern for the environment were basic American values."
The mayors from all three cities, and Southfield, have signed the Cool Cities petition, pledging to take steps to reduce their cities' carbon footprint. The U.S. is the largest producer of CO2, a greenhouse gas, in the world and it does so mainly through burning fossil fuels (like coal, natural gas and gasoline) to produce electricity and energy for homes, businesses and vehicles.
The idea behind the forum is to create a casual and fun atmosphere for like-minded young professionals to take action. Sierra Club & Beer events take place the last Thursday of the every month through September. Topics will include mass transit, buying local, renewable energy and greening a person's social life, among others.
