Birmingham rejects Shain Park bids, goes back to drawing board

It's back to the drawing board for Birmingham's Shain Park. The City Commission rejected bids for building the underground parking portion of it Monday night and it appears plans have been shelved until at least this winter.

City officials originally had grand plans for redeveloping the downtown green space. Those plans called for a 210-space parking garage beneath the park and expanding the park south, over a surface parking lot next to The Townsend Hotel. The cost estimates for these plans began at $14.5 million.

The dual-level underground deck would have been beneath green space, walkways and band shell, while providing for the bustling downtown's growing need for parking. The construction would have been tied into nearby sewer and street work and take two years to complete.

However, that is all on hold now as city officials head back to the drawing board.
