Lecture focuses on link between preservation, sustainability

Historic preservation and sustainability are practically synonymous, but many people in Metro Detroit don't realize this.

That's a problem the good people of Lincoln Park plan to remedy on Tuesday, when the Lincoln Park Historical Museum and the Lincoln Park Preservation Alliance will co-host a lecture on green preservation called PastForward.

"The whole green sustainability movement has put historic preservation in a whole new light," says Leslie Lynch-Wilson, president of the Lincoln Park Preservation Alliance.

Preservation Wayne's consulting architect, Mike Kirk, will lead the discussion. Kirk is principal of Neumann/Smith Architecture, where he leads the firm's interiors/adaptive re-use studio. He is also a member of the American Institute of Architects and is LEED design certified. He will lecture on efforts to keep local communities relevant and vibrant today and in the future through sustainability and preservation.

"The true definition of sustainability is to work with what we already have," Lynch-Wilson says. "In terms of buildings, it's working with the buildings we already have."

The presentation will be at 7 p.m. at the City Council chamber of the Lincoln Park City Hall, 1355 Southfield Road, Lincoln Park. For information, contact Jeff Day, curator of the Lincoln Park Historical Museum, at (313) 386-3137 or Lynch-Wilson at (313) 598-3137.
