Lighthouse renovates two Pontiac buildings into 40 residential units

Renovations of two derelict apartment buildings in Pontiac have led to $7.7 million in investment, more jobs and more affordable places to live for local residents.

Building No. 1 to go under the hammer was the Beacon Square structure at 101 Mechanic St. The former magnet for the drug game once featured 50 units but was rehabbed into 28 new apartments.

Building No. 2 is the Beacon Town Homes at 449 Whiitemore. The 12-unit structure features 3-bedroom and two-bathroom townhomes. Each home also has an attached garage and full basement.

The project helps meet the rental needs for the Unity Park neighborhood where 30 percent of the rentals were either overcrowded or substandard, according to the last census. It also complements the 98 new owner-occupied homes and 180 homes renovated by Lighthouse of Oakland County over the last decade.

Lighthouse helps families move from poverty and crisis to independence and self sufficiency. It also provides emergency food, housing, medical, utility and other services to people in need. It has been doing these things in Pontiac for years.

Last year Lighthouse teamed up with local institutions in Ferndale to rehab three blighted houses and sell them to first-time homeowners.
