Three old homes down, one large mixed-use
building is about to go up. That's the case in downtown Northville where work crews
are preparing to start raising the Center Street Square
project.Once the site is prepped, construction
workers will install the components for the project's geothermal heating and
cooling system. The next step is to actually build the structure at Center and
Rayson streets, a process that is estimated to take three or four months.
The mixed-use development will feature
2,400 square feet of first floor retail underneath 13 luxury condos in the
three-story building. Each unit will range in size between 1,200 and 1,800
square feet of space with luxury features like granite countertops and hardwood
floors. Each unit will also have its own balcony and attached covered parking.
They will be priced between $290,000 and $365,000.
A big feature of this project, being
developed by Washington, Mich.,-based Meridien
Development, is its environmental aspects. The geothermal heating and
cooling system is considered one of the most environmentally friendly systems
in use. It uses the constant temperature of the earth to help heat and
cool the building, helping keep those costs low.
About one-quarter of the roof will be
covered with plants, commonly known as a green roof. The vegetation
helps keep the structure cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, saving
significant amounts of energy. The developer also salvaged and recycled much of
the three old houses that were razed to make room for the development, keeping
it out of local landfills.
Meridien Development is building homes in
communities across Metro Detroit, such as Parkside of Plymouth
and Cherrywood
Parc. For information, call Tricha
